How does the theory test work?

The theory test has two parts. The first part is a multiple choice test in which you answer 50 questions in just under an hour (in most cases it takes much less time than that). These questions are based on the Highway Code and there are over 800 in total: the 50 you see are drawn randomly from this huge question bank.

To get a pass in this first part, you need to score 43 or more. That’s 86%! Wow, A* territory! Unless you’re some kind of genius, numbers like that are scary. But I’ve got some good news for you. You see, I know what the questions are. Every single one, in every detail. Of course, I don’t know which 50 you’ll be asked but I’ve got all 800+ in the official question bank for Cars and also the entire question bank for Motorycles (a total of 1250 or so). It cost me a lot of money and I have to pay the government (yes, them again) a royalty on every membership but it’s worth it because these questions are gold dust!

Hazard Perception Test

So that’s the multiple choice. The other part of the theory test is the Hazard Perception Test. In this part, you will see 14 video clips of driving situations. Something will happen requiring you to take action and you will be marked according to whether you noticed the problem and how quickly. You must get 44 out of a maximum possible mark of 75 to pass.

The sad truth is that more people fail their theory test due to the hazard perception test part than the multiple choice part. Why? Is it lack of practice? Not usually.
